Start by watching from outside the enclosure. If you are building trust, offer interaction only when your hamster is awake and willing, and give them an easy way to retreat. An exercise ball is not a good shortcut to enrichment; a suitable enclosure, deep burrowing bedding, and an appropriately sized solid running wheel offer better choices.
